How I Started Out

When I first was sat down at an Apple IIe personal computer in elementary school, I was instantly mesmerized by the possibilities of what I could do with it. We played games like Oregon Trail and Number Munchers, and wrote rudimentary BASIC programs. I knew I wanted to be a programmer from that moment on.

When I got a little older I discovered one of the greatest killer apps ever to come from Apple: HyperCard. I spent countless hours creating stacks and learning how to program in HyperTalk. I build games similar to Shadowgate and Uninvited, point-and-click adventures that were popular at the time.

In high school I got into Advanced Placement Computer Science and learned C++ on the Borland IDE for MacOS. C++ was very different from HyperTalk, but I loved the challenge. I learned about pointers, memory management, types, structs, and classes.

After high school I went straight to work for a small Internet Service Provider in my hometown. I learned about Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP, Radius, Frame Relay, and T1 lines. I learned how to build websites, manage servers, and provide technical support to customers. That was were I found my calling: I wanted to be a web developer.

Hobbies

How I Spend My Freetime

One of my greatest passions is music. I've been playing guitar since I was a teenager, and I've been in a few bands over the years. I've played in bars, clubs, and festivals. I've written songs and recorded albums. I also love electronic and house music. I currently produce music on my Mac equipped with Logic Pro. I have several releases available on all major streaming platforms. I also DJ at local clubs and events. You can find my artist website at jaysudo.com.

I also have a passion for writing. I maintain a blog where I write about my experiences as a developer and write in-depth tutorials on front-end and back-end development. You can find my blog at blog.designly.biz, and is also syndicated on Medium, Dev.to and Hashnode.

I've worked with a variety of technologies, including React, Next.js, Svelte, SvelteKit, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Node.js, Python, PHP, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, AWS, Docker, Cloudflare, CI/CD, Linux, Circuit Design, Embedded Systems, Control Systems, PLCs, and Microcontrollers.

Community

Giving Back

One of my favorite ways to give back to the tech community is developing and contributing to open-source projects. I've written packages for React, Next.js, cross-platform Electron apps and chrome extensions. I've also contributed to several NPM packages and GitHub repositories. You can visit my GitHub profile at github.com/designly1.

There also several causes that I'm passionate about. I've donated to organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation, various open-source projects, veterans charities, Saint Jude's Children's Hospital and The Special Olympics.
